Government support for impacted businesses

The Government has announced a comprehensive billion package to help manage the economic impacts of Covid-19. Within this is specific support available to enterprises who may face laying off or reducing staff hours because of COVID-19.

If you are an employer, contractor, sole trader or self-employed you may qualify to get the COVID-19 Wage Subsidy and/or Leave Payment.

When you apply you will need to provide your IRD number, business name and address, names of your employees and their IRD numbers, and contact details for your business and your employees. Processing and approving applications will happen as quickly as possible - the aim is to make payments five working days after required information has been received – but this will depend on the volume of applications received.

New report forecasts COVID-19 impact on regional economy

A new forecast for Taranaki’s regional economy for the next 12 months finds the economic impacts of COVID-19 will create the greatest economic shock in living memory, and could have a significant impact on the region.
The report, commissioned by Venture Taranaki and New Plymouth District Council, and undertaken by economists Infometrics, anticipates a 8.5% contraction in regional GDP for the year to March 2021 – slightly worse  than an 8.0% drop forecast nationwide, while jobs are expected to decline 9.5% in the region, against a 9.8 % drop nationally.
