Mat Hocken, Nuffield Scholar 2017, presents generating innovation through a farmer and grower-led system of innovation.

Mat farms 1000 dairy cows with his dad in the Manawatu, a fourth generation farmer. Schooled at Palmerston North Boys, he contiued his studies at Canterbury University completing law and commerce. Mat was admitted to the bar as a barrister and solicitor. Following his undergrad studies Mat completed a masters in politics at Cambridge University UK.

Following his study Mat worked in Brussels for five years in a public affairs and communications consultancy, before moving to Sydney where he worked as a senior advisor for government and industry relations. Mat and  his wife, Jana, then moved back to the family farm in 2013 where they live with their 2 daughters. 

Mat is focused on growing the family farming legacy and building an innovative and successful business. He has also played rugby to a high level, representing New Zealand at under 21 level, as well as playing test rugby for Belgium and the Barbarians.
